Punta San Matteo (3678 m) is one of the most scenic and fascinating peaks in the Ortles-Cevedale Group, renowned for its historical significance due to battles fought during World War I. The Punta San Matteo Normal route from Rifugio Berni or Rifugio Branca is a relatively accessible glacier ascent, it requires minimal experience in high-altitude environments and good physical preparation.

Punta San Matteo mountaineering experience

The ascent of Punta San Matteo along the Normal route begins at Berni Refuge (2560 m), near the Gavia Pass. From the hut, the route follows the Dosegù Glacier. Once on the glacier, the route follows moderate snow and ice slopes. The final section follows the steeper but generally well-snow covered Southwest ridge, leading to the summit cross.

The climb to Punta San Matteo can also be done from the Branca Refuge and through the Forni Glacier.

From the summit, the views are breathtaking: Monte Cevedale, Gran Zebrù, Pizzo Tresero, and the entire Ortles-Cevedale range can be admired. A rewarding and scenic ascent, perfect for those looking for a high-altitude experience without extreme technical difficulties!
