Ortler mountaineering experience

The ascent of Ortler along the West Ridge route, Via dei Meranesi (Meranerweg) begins at Tre Fontane (1605 m), Trafoi.From the starting point, the route follows the path until reaching the Borletti refuge (2188 m), where the climbers stay for the night.

From the refuge, the route continues up to the scree slopes leading to the West Ridge approach. The climb of the West Ridge is on mixed terrain with rock climbing sections (grade III) and exposed sections. The ridge alternates sections on snow and ice. The itinerary rejoins the Normal route in the last section, leading to the summit cross of the Ortles (3905 m).

The summit of Ortler via West Ridge can also be done from Solda, taking the Normal route of the Payer refuge.
