The Grand Combin is one of the most imposing peaks in the Pennine Alps, located along the border between Italy and Switzerland. Its massive glacial structure and majestic profile make it a fascinating yet challenging and demanding mountain.

The Grand Combin mountaineering experience along the Normal Route, via Spalla Isler (Isler Shoulder), offers a long and remote itinerary and some technical difficulties, including extensive glacier travel with crevasses, steep snow slopes, and an exposed final ridge on mixed snow and rock.

Grand Combin mountaineering experience

Climbing Grand Combin (4314 m), in the western Pennine Alps in the canton of Valais, along the Normal Route, via Spalla Isler (Isler Shoulder), is an extremely exciting mountaineering experience that takes place in two days. Every mountaineer must try this mountaineering climb at least once: the climb requires experience and good physical fitness.

Day one
The appointment with the mountain guide for the equipment check is at the Crèvacol ski area. Transfer to the parking lot where the car will be left, from the starting point with a 1237 meter walk of altitude difference the mountaineers reach the very welcoming Cabane du Valsorey refuge in about 3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Day two
From the refuge, the climb starts before dawn. The summit of Combin de Grafeneire, the highest peak of Grand Combin massif, along the Normal route via Spalla Isler, can be reached in about 6 hours with an elevation gain of 1277 meters. From the top of this majestic mountain, the mountaineers can admire unforgettable panorama. The descent is along the same route with an elevation loss of 2514 meters. The ascent and descent takes approximately 12/14 hours.
