The Barre des Ecrins is the highest peak in the Écrins massif, located in the French Dauphiné Alps. It is a symbolic summit for classic mountaineering and a major goal for high-altitude enthusiasts. The ascent of the Barre des Ecrins is a challenging climb requiring solid technical skills and good physical preparation. The Normal route typically starts from the Refuge des Écrins, which is reached via the Glacier Blanc Hut.

Barre des Ecrins Normal route

Climbing Barre des Ecrins (4102 m) along the Normal route, is an awesome mountaineering experience that takes place in two days.

Day one
The itinerary starts from Prè de Madame Carle (1874 m) in Vallouise (France) and leads to Refuge des Ecrins (3175 m) in a 5/6 hours walk, with a 1300 meters elevation gain, on an easy path and then passing a fascinating glacier. Dinner and overnight stay at Refuge des Ecrins.

Day two
From the refuge, the climb starts before dawn. The summit of Barre des Ecrins, along the Normal route, can be reached in about 5 hours with an elevation gain of 930 meters. From the top the mountaineers can admire unforgettable panorama. The descent is along the same climbing route with an elevation loss of 2230 meters. The ascent and descent takes approximately 10/12 hours.

The normal route is graded PD+ (Slightly Difficult Plus)
